Weightlifting is a strength sport that consists of lifting weights and is one of the oldest sports in the world. The athlete is scored by his or her two movements: the grab and the sweep and the throw.
The sport has been officially represented at the modern Olympic Games since its inception in 1896 (and Sydney in 2000 for the Women’s events).
During the year 2022, the Albanian Weightlifting Federation has managed to carry out several activities.
On May 25 – June 2, the 100th European Championship for adults took place in the city of Tirana near the Sports Palace “Feti Borova”.
40 European countries took part in this activity, being represented by their best athletes. About 500 athletes and 150 officials came to Tirana. This activity had a special importance due to the way it was organized.
On 27.05.2022, at 17:00, the opening ceremony of this major activity took place, where the Mayor of Tirana, Mr. Erion Veliaj and the Ministry of Education and Sports Ms. Evis Kushi and the President of the Albanian National Olympic Committee Mr. Fidel Ylli. The highest personalities of the World Weightlifting Federation, such as the General Secretary Mr. Mohamed Jalood, and the four (4) Presidents of the continents also participate in this activity.
In this activity, Albania was represented by several athletes, among them the athlete Erkand Qerimaj was declared the European champion in the breakaway style, achieving a great success in Albanian weightlifting. Erkand Qerimaj won a gold medal in the breakaway style with 150kg in the 73kg category.
On June 25-26, 2022, the Albanian Weightlifting Federation organized the grand event of the congress (of the World Federation) for the elections of the new President, Mr. Mohammad Jalood. We. 156 Presidents and Secretaries from all over the world were present.
The event took place in the Palace of Congresses and lasted two days.
This was an important activity for our federation, as well as for Albania.
After the electoral elections, the Prime Minister of Albania Mr. Edi Rama organized a special evening for all officials at the Palace of Brigades.
